ex-, e-: out of, away from

When Pompeii was EXCAVATED, the superimposed earth was dug away from it.

If anyone is EXCLUDED from a social gathering, that person is shut out of it.

To EXCLAIM is to cry out.

An EXCRESCENCE is an abnormal outgrowth.

If anyone is EXHAUSTED at the end of the day, all of that person's strength has been drawn out of him or her.

An ENORMOUS house is out of the normal in size.

To EXPAND is to spread out.

If a man EXTENDS his hand towards someone, he stretches it out.

If a woman EXCELS others, she rises, in ability or distinction out of the level of ordinary women.

An EMIGRANT is someone who migrates out of a country; when he enters another country, he becomes an immigrant (see IN-, section 9).

SPELLING: When E- (short form of EX-) combines to make an English word, the following consonant is not doubled: enormous, event, edit, educate, eject, elapse, elicit, elide, eliminate, elongate, elucidate, emanate, emancipate, emasculate, eradicate, erase, erect, eruption, erosion, evade, evacuate, etc. Exceptions: effusion and effusive.
