contra-: against, contrary to

When smugglers bring CONTRABAND goods into a country, they do so against the proclamation of the government; such smugglers CONTRAVENE, or go against, the law.

In a CONTROVERSY, two or more disputants argue against each other.

The President's opinion are sometimes COUNTER to those of Congress; in such a case, he ENCOUNTERS opposition.

A COUNTERPOISE is a weight or force which balances another to which it is opposite; for instance, two children on a seesaw.

There is a marked CONTRAST between a child who is obedient and one who CONTRADICTS, or "speaks against" those in authority, his elders.
